Career Guide

If you're at college or university ...

Further and higher educational institutions usually have their own careers service. So, your first stop is to make an appointment with an adviser find out their availability.

A list of all university careers services is given at the Prospects website .

Libraries

Although there's lots of information on-line, it's also worth checking out what's available at your local library.

Most libraries have a careers section, and you'll also be able to get information about employers - you need to research employers before going to job interviews.

Ask the library staff for help if you can't find what you're looking for.

Your local council

Many local councils have careers services, and they may have a website where you can get general guidance, and information about the service.

Find your local council's website at Directgov.

'Connexions'

This is an advisory service for young people aged between 13 and 19.

Connexions provides advice about a whole range of subjects, including careers.

See their website for more information, or call 080 800 13 2 19 to speak to an adviser.

Age discrimination

It is unlawful for an employer to discriminate on the grounds of age. This applies to anyone regardless of how old or young they are.

However, for some jobs there is a legal age requirement. For example, you must be 18 to work behind the bar in a pub. In this case, it is legal for an employer to refuse to employ you.

If you think that you've been the subject of age discrimination, call the ACAS (Advisory Conciliation and Advisory Service) Helpline on 0845 747 4747 - you can call between 8 am and 6 pm on weekdays.

ACAS can also help with other employment problems such as redundancy, harassment at work etc.

The Directgov website has more details about age discrimination.
