When you've been made redundant from your job, or you're trying to get back into work after being out of employment for a while (eg when you've been raising children) it's a good idea to sign up for some training courses as soon as possible.

If you're registered as unemployed, you can often get training courses at a reduced rate, or even free.

More information about training:

1. Career development loans - one way to pay for training. The 'Lifelonglearning' site has lots of information about training and how to pay for it.

2. Child care - see this site if you need to arrange child care while studying, training or working.

3. Connexions - provides confidential advice, support and information to young people between the ages of 13 and 19.

4. DCFS - 'Department for Children, Schools and Families' (government department - formerly DFES).

5. Directgov - training and workplace learning section.

6. Learn Direct - advice about learning and training courses. You can also call them on 0800 101 901.

7. UK Universities - this site gives a list of universities with their website addresses.

Education and training

To make sure that you keep your skills up-to-date, you need to undertake regular training (sometimes called 'professional development').

It's always a good idea to consult your employer about training courses - often they will pay for you to attend courses that are relevant to your job.

However, there may be times when you need to arrange (and pay for) your own training courses, for example if you're looking to change careers, or you want to learn some new skills that are not directly relevant to your job.
