Age discrimination

There are laws which protect you from age discrimination while you're in employment as well as when you're applying for a job.

It isn't illegal for an employer to ask for your date of birth on an application form. But if you don't get the job and think it was due to age discrimination, you may be able to use the fact that they asked for your date of birth as part of the evidence for discrimination.

If you're suffering age discrimination at work, you should talk to your manager, supervisor, personnel department or trade union representative. Having some evidence is often useful.

When your manager is the person harassing you, then talk to someone at a higher level in the organisation.

The TUC have a guide (WorkSmart) about employment matters including information about age discrimination.

You'll also find plenty more details about age discrimination and what you can do about it on the Adviceguide website from Citizen's Advice.
