Jobcentre Plus

The agency supports people of working age, paying state benefits where appropriate, and helping people to get back into work. It also helps employers to fill their job vacancies.

If you become unemployed, you should contact Jobcentre Plus by phone (0800 055 6688 between 8am and 6pm) and they will arrange for you to claim appropriate benefits, eg Jobseeker's allowance.

Jobcentre Plus have programmes  to help you get back into work - see New Deal below.

What to do if you become unemployed ...

Take action immediately. Don't just hope that a new job will come along and everything will be fine. It may be several weeks or even months before you find a new job, and in the meantime you might get into debt, or even be unable to pay your bills.

Help is available from the government. Part of your National Insurance Contributions (NICs) go towards unemployment benefit. So, when you become unemployed you can make a claim.

Your first task is to call Jobcentre Plus to see which benefits you might be able to claim. They will be able to tell you how your claim will be dealt with.

You can call Jobcentre Plus on 0800 055 6688 (calls are free from a UK landline, but you may be charged if you call from your mobile).

Before you call, you'll need to hand the following:

     - your National Insurance Number
     - details about your rent or mortgage
     - details about your present or last job
     - information about your savings and any income you have.

Alternatively, you can apply for benefits on-line through the Department for Work and Pensions' website.
