Career Guide

Recycle!

If you find a book that's particularly helpful, try to find a second hand copy - there's often a big difference in price.

You can find second-hand copies of many books on Amazon and eBay, and you'll also find lots of bargains in charity shops. And don't forget to use your 'network' of contacts - maybe a friend or relative has a copy of a book you need.

When you've finished with a book you've bought, pass it on to someone else, or sell it on.

Subjects

There are really 4 subject areas which you need to focus on when trying to get a job, or when you're changing careers:

- general approach/ techniques for job-hunting
- networking
- making applications - eg preparing your CV, writing covering letters
- preparing for job interviews.

Networking

Many jobs never hit the recruitment websites, nor the classified sections of newspapers, because employers recruit people they know through their network of contacts. In job-hunting, you often get further, faster by using your contacts to help you find job vacancies.

So, you must spend some of your job-hunting time contacting people you know to find job vacancies. And that also means developing your network of contacts so that you have a better chance of getting the right job now, and in the future.

Books about careers and job-hunting can be very useful -
if you have time to read them!
But you don't need to buy them - try your local library first (or the careers section in your university or college library).

For your local council library, look at the website for your council and find the libraries section. You'll often find they have an on-line catalogue where you can search for books and sometimes reserve them on-line too.

If you don't know the website address of your council, find it here .
